New York Shopping: Last Chance to see Lady Gaga’s Workshop and Holiday Windows
By Vivian Kelly and Theadora Brack
New Year’s Day weekend is the perfect time to visit New York, scoop up some sales, and check out the holiday windows. On our to-do list is a second visit to Lady Gaga’s Workshop, currently holding court at Barneys department store. The exhibit and shop were given the entire fifth floor of the historic flagship. That’s about 5550 feet, Little Monsters! Talk about a Bad Romance!
My heart will go on
Designed by Lady Gaga and supersonic stylist and art director Nicola Formichetti, the holiday window spectaculars are surreal and trippy, boasting psychedelic color schemes. Here we felt a “Groovitational” pull at first sight of the fluorescent mermaids and sirens, and in no time, we were mesmerized—hook, link and sinker.
Born this way
Here you’ll also find Lady Gaga, lounging about in her wig-shaped, hair-covered boudoir. Yes, you heard us. It was created as a nod to Gaga’s hairstylist, Bob Recine. On the surface, it appears to be a Louis XV style furniture, glowing in its requisite gilt and glory, but it’s actually hair. And a lot of it! A lover a sky-high wigs herself, Marie Antoinette would have been very jealous!
Going up?
Once inside Barneys, a second team of Vegas-worthy Gaga-mermaids leads us up to the Gaga Workshop, located on the fifth floor. More art and sculptures by Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide Pierson abound! Watch out for the coveted chocolate sculls, stocking claws and dress-shaped cookies, along with a gigantic Lady “Dada” spider, donning a spectacular blond bobbed wig.
Don’t forget to show some love and holiday spirit with a little spirited shopping. Lady Gaga fancies the hair bows, and we’ve got our eye on the poker chips! Here’s the deal. A quarter of what you drop at the register goes to the Born This Way Foundation, an anti-bullying campaign. Now that’s a win-grin!
